About the Dante Alighieri Society

Bio & Mission
Founded in Rome in 1889, the Dante Alighieri Society is a global non-profit organization dedicated to promoting Italian language and culture around the world. Named after the great poet Dante Alighieri, the Society supports cultural diplomacy, education, and community engagement through its wide network of branches.
The Dante Alighieri Society of Durban is one of the most active branches in Southern Africa. Since its establishment, it has been offering Italian language courses for all levels, organizing cultural events, and collaborating with local and international partners to promote the richness of Italian heritage.
With a strong commitment to accessibility, the Durban branch also supports free Italian language programs in public schools and participates in educational projects co-funded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI).
